You've probably seen many scrapbook ideas using regular size photos, but it's fun to also add in a large photo scrapbook layout too! BONUS: In this post we also have tips for writing on photos and a list of my favorite pens for scrapbooking!

Hi friends! It's Scrapbooking Ideas: How to make a large photo scrapbook layout

Tips for Making a Large Photo Scrapbook Layout:

  • Use small patterns in your paper choices: When I am scrapbooking with big photo images I only use small patterned papers because there is not much space on the page to decorate. Also small patterns won't overwhelm your large photo.
  • Coordinate the papers to your photo: It's good to pick up the colors from the photo in the papers and in the embellishments. For this picture I wanted to use the color palette mustard, kiwi green, turquoise, blue and a soft pink. So I cut two thin paper stripes from the "Retreat" and the "Florentine" papers and used my fringe scissors to fringe the borders. I glued them under my photo and stitched with my sewing machine and pink thread a few times over the border.
  • Tie in elements from your photo:Because of the flower in my daughters hair I wanted to use some flowers too. I fussy cut some light pink flowers from the  floral "Charm" paper. Then I searched for more matching papers and embellishments and found the soft pink "Let's Go" Tag from the "Happy Place" paper, the cute striped Fabric Bows and the butterflies from the "Blissful" paper.
  • Create a visual flow with your embellishments: I decided to arrange the embellishments diagonally  from the left corner on the bottom to the right corner above my 12×12 layout.

How to Finish Your Large Photo Scrapbook Layout:

I glued the tag on the left side and added some flowers on the tag and between the fringed papers. Then I added the title "Enjoy the ride" with one of these amazing Glossy Puffy Stickers. I used 3D dots to add a little bit more dimension for this little banner. Then I decorated the top right corner using some of those fussy cut flowers, the cute striped fabric bow and some stickers.Scrapbooking 8x10 and larger photos is easier than you think! How to Write Directly on a Photo:

If you've ever wondered what kind of pen can write on photo paper, we have some tips for writing on photographs for you. I wrote my journaling on the photo and also drew some lines with a ruler to keep it all nice and straight. I always use an overhead marker with a thin top in black to write on photos, so nothing blurs. You can use any marker made specifically for writing on photos so it doesn't smear on a slick surface. And it's always good to test your marker first on something else.

How to Safely Write on Photos:

From Maggie: If you're wondering is it safe to write on photos, we have some additional tips for you. There's a difference between a regular pen and an archival safe pen. Because I have digital backups of my photos, I don't always worry too much about this. I have even used a sharpie to write on some of my photos. I know that might make some of you cringe! haha!

I do keep my favorite archival safe pens on hand for scrapbooking so that I'm not doing any long term damage to my photos. This is especially important if you are working with old photos or photos you can't replace.
