Homemade Air Fryer Egg Rolls

I bet every foodie and home chef has a list of foods they've always wanted to make. My list is pretty long. Homemade pasta. Stuffed ravioli. Real deal tortillas.

And Egg Rolls.

With a few ingredients and a little practice, I think we've got it. These egg rolls are so fun to make.

Hamilton Beach Large Capacity Air Fryer

This air fryer is a total game changer when it comes to fried foods. We took a traditionally deep-fried treat and made it even more delicious with just a fraction of the oil. Totally easy to program and use, too.

A bowl of chopped cabbage with carrots and onions next to a bowl of soy sauce and seasonings

Ingredients Needed:

  • Ground pork (not sausage)
  • Fresh grated ginger
  • Garlic
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Chinese 5 Spice - Note: This is a preference addition. If you aren't a fan of the Chinese 5 spice, then leave it out. You can also use onion powder instead (totally different flavor).
  • Sugar + salt
  • Green cabbage
  • Carrot
  • Green onions
  • Egg roll wrappers
  • Water
  • Oil or oil spray

We used regular, inexpensive green cabbage for this recipe. If you want to save a little time, grab a bag of pre-shredded cabbage mix with carrots.

TIP: Keep the egg roll wrappers covered with a damp cloth or wet paper towels so they do not dry out while assembling the rolls.

A white skillet with cabbage and pork filling for egg rolls

How to Make Egg Rolls:

  1. In a non-stick skillet, cook the pork with the ginger and garlic on medium until lightly brown and no longer pink. Drain and return to the skillet.
  2. Stir together the soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, 5 spice, and salt in a small bowl. Pour over the prepared pork and stir.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage, shredded carrots, and chopped green onions to the skillet. Toss + stir to combine well.
  4. Cook and stir the egg roll filling until the cabbage has wilted, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  5. Place the roll wrappers under a damp towel. To assemble (see picture below), lay a wrapper in front of you so a corner points toward you like a diamond.
  6. With your finger or a brush, wet the edges of the wrapper with water (1). Brush the top corner about an inch with water (2) because this is the sealing edge and will help keep the egg roll closed.
  7. Scoop 3 heaping tablespoons in the center of the wrapper (3).
  8. Fold the bottom corner up over the filling (4).
  9. Bring the left and right corners to the center, pressing gently and tucking in (5).
  10. Roll the egg roll away from you, folding it on itself, and place it seam side down on a lightly oiled non-stick surface (6).
  11. Repeat until all of the wrappers and filling have been used.

I like to use a brush to wet the edges. This keeps my fingers clean so they don't stick to the wrappers while I'm trying to fold and roll.

Once you get the hang of it, making your own egg rolls at home is a breeze. I can't wait to try a Southwestern version in the air fryer, too. Speaking of the air fryer, here's how to cook our egg rolls in one.

How to Cook Egg Rolls in an Air Fryer:

  1. Lightly brush or spray the basket of the air fryer with oil. Brush a very small amount of oil on both sides of the egg rolls.
  2. Place the prepared egg rolls seam side down in the basket in a single layer so they are not touching. We were able to cook 3 or 4 at a time, working in batches.
  3. Close the air fryer and set the temperature to 390 degrees.
  4. Cook for 6 minutes, turn carefully with tongs, and cook for another 6 minutes until golden and crisp.
  5. Transfer the cooked egg rolls to newspaper or brown paper bags to drain off any excess oil.
  6. Continue to cook, working in batches, until the egg rolls are done.

TIP: You can start cooking the batches while you are still assembling egg rolls. The handy timer on the air fryer keeps track of cooking and will shut off at the end of the cooking cycle.

And I'm in love with how easy it is to clean up the air fryer. No oil to worry about, no spatters and messes.

It is so hard to resist biting right into one of these Air Fryer Egg Rolls. Light and golden on the outside, hot and tender on the inside.

More Tips for the Best Results:

  • Take your time until you get the hang of it. The key thing is to make sure the edge is sealed so the filling doesn't fall out.
  • Don't skip adding a bit of oil to the egg rolls before cooking because this helps the outside get golden and crispy. You can use an oil spray instead.
  • Make sure the egg rolls aren't touching because you want the air to circulate properly for even cooking.
  • There is no need to preheat the Hamilton Beach Large Capacity Air Fryer. Just arrange the food, cook, and eat.
  • If the egg rolls need to be reheated, you can do that in the air fryer, too.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauces such as sweet + sour, hot mustard, soy sauce and garnish with fresh, chopped green onions.
  • Make an Asian-inspired meal and serve these Homemade Egg Rolls with your favorite stir fry dish and rice. So yummy!
  • If you aren't a fan of Chinese 5 Spice powder, you can leave it out. Or, cut the amount in half to taste.
