Ratings and Reviews

Slow, backup doesn't progress

The new Synology photos app seemed like a good alternative to iCloud. I haven't been able to tell yet as it's taken about 12 hours to back up maybe 40 photos over my home wifi. If it's finished by 2022, I'll update my review.

You can only do what it wants to do

I have my photos set up in Synology Drive, indexed the way I like them, in a way in which I can navigate them easily. Perfect

Can i get Photos to just read from the Drive folder and simply show the pictures in the way that google photos or apple gallery does? No. And after much internet research, apparently no one else can either. I really don't want to mess about with 3TB of photos and permissions and locations etc, just to get an app to read and show them, when it should be much easier to point Photos at a specific photo location (drive) and just ask it to read from there.

Synology help files and advice are terrible too. Searching a simple term like "syncing Synology photos to Synology Drive" links to people complaining about the same thing. Other queries link to incorrect solutions. it appears to read random keywords and then hopes the solution is the right one. It never is

Good, but still not a replacement for Google Photos

It looks very promising, but... Still lacks some fundamental features. Especially the ability to add (or index) already existing picture folders. I couldn't find anywhere where it says that the amount of data will not get duplicated on my NAS. I have a moderate collection of pics which is 490 GB. I don't fancy duplicating it and wasting expensive storage space. Why can't it simply index already existing folders? Upload via wifi seems good, but it stalls using a mobile data connection. Google Photos work flawlessly in this respect. DSM is only an RC, therefore I might change my review when the final product is released. And hopefully for the 5-star rating. 3 stars for now.

UPDATE: dropped the review to 2 stars. I've logged out from the app and logged back in. Settings we're lost. Re-enabled the backup and it backs up again 700+ photos from my iPhone 12. Dear Synology, please fix this ASAP as it is very user-unfriendly
